Year 5 visit to St Michael’s church

On Friday Year 5 enjoyed a visit to St Michael’s church on the run up to Easter. Whilst there, the children took part in a variety of activities that explored the reasons why Christians celebrate Easter, listened to Bible stories and look at the symbolic significance and meaning behind some Easter traditions.

All the children thoroughly enjoyed their visit!

Happy Chinese New Year! 新年快乐

Today, Year 5 have been celebrating Chinese New Year. In class, we have been learning about how and why each year is represented by an animal from learning the Chinese Zodiac story. We have also attempted to write Happy New Year in traditional Chinese lettering 新年快乐.  We then attempted to create a paper Chinese lantern with a design of our choice and finally we opened a fortune cookie and shared our fortunes.

ROBIN AND THE SHERWOOD HOODIES – Y5 & 6 PERFORMANCE

Yesterday, after weeks of hard work, year five and six shared their performance of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies with friends and family at Abraham Darby.

The show acted as a leavers’ performance for year six so they embraced the roles and year five did a brilliant job of supporting the singing. The children were fantastic and should be really proud of themselves.

A big thankyou to Abraham Darby for the use of their theatre for the performance and our rehearsals beforehand. The children loved the setting and enjoyed being in the spotlight. We are already looking forward to next year!

Year 5 Summer Term Information

We are excited to welcome Year 5 back for an exciting Summer Term.

This term our topic will be ‘Ancient Greeks’ and we will begin by learning who the Ancient Greeks were through our history/literacy learning and will explore the geography of both ancient and modern Greece.

Our PE days this term are:  Monday – Indoor and Thursday – Outdoor.

Homework will still be given out on a Friday and will be due back in the following Thursday unless otherwise specified.

Homework will consist of a maths activity and spellings. Additionally, we also expect one adult comment in your child’s reading diary each week.

Today’s Eco Council Meeting

The Eco Council’s current topic is Health and Well-Being.

During today’s Eco Council meeting we were joined by Louise, School Canteen Nutritionist.  The children participated in an Eatwell Guide workshop. By the end of the session the children were able to use the Eatwell Guide to help them to understand how to get a  balance of healthier and more sustainable food.

JOIN IN THE JRSO’S PADLOCK THURSDAY!!

The Junior Road Safety Officers and children at Woodlands are currently working towards the GOLD Modeshift award.  The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children and young people.

A recent project for the JRSO’s is the ‘Padlock Thursday’.  Every Thursday a JRSO places a cardboard padlock on a bike or scooter.  The child then takes the padlock to our reception desk where they receive a prize.  The JRSO’s hope to see more children each week coming to school on their bikes and scooters.

This weeks winner is Axel (Year 5). Well done!

YEAR 5 TRIP TO PRIORSLEE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

IMG_6071Today, Year 5 went on a trip to the Priorslee Campus of The University of Wolverhampton. The aim of the trip was for the children to understand what life is like as a University student and about the variety of subjects that they can study, if they apply for a university place.

Over the course of the day, children had a go at various activities including mask-making, finger-printing (as a forensic scientist) and learning a dance from the West End version of Sister Act.
We all had a fantastic day, experiencing many new activities and imagining future possibilities.

Here are some photos of our fantastic day:
