Year 5 Summer Term Information

We are excited to welcome Year 5 back for an exciting Summer Term.

This term our topic will be ‘Ancient Greeks’ and we will begin by learning who the Ancient Greeks were through our history/literacy learning and will explore the geography of both ancient and modern Greece.

Our PE days this term are:  Monday – Indoor and Thursday – Outdoor.

Homework will still be given out on a Friday and will be due back in the following Thursday unless otherwise specified.

Homework will consist of a maths activity and spellings. Additionally, we also expect one adult comment in your child’s reading diary each week.

Homework 1 – Project Due Friday 22nd September

Homework (Week beginning 11th September)

Your first homework project can be based upon a topic of your own choice. You need to think about something you are interested in e.g. animals, football, The Romans, Music, and Lego.

You will need to create something to share and discuss with the class. This might be something you have made with notes, it might be a computer PowerPoint presentation, it might be a scrap book or can even be a model/practical based piece of work etc. It is up to you. However, the homework needs to represent 2 weeks of work.

This will be due in on Friday 22nd September

Thank you

Reading Homework for Year 6

Children in Year 6 are expected to read at home every night for at least 20 minutes. We would really appreciate your support with this, as reading is an essential life skill and we believe that wider reading will also help them to develop a wider vocabulary when writing.

During the week, they will need to have their reading diary signed by an adult at least twice. Reading diaries will be checked every Friday to ensure there are a minimum of 2 parental comments throughout the week. Children are awarded reading tickets for each parental comment and have their name entered into a class draw each time they have their diary signed by an adult. The winner of the class draw will win a voucher.

Support for parents writing comments in their reading diary.

Link to Mymaths

During year 6, we will be using mymaths for different homework tasks. The children have a school and unique personal log in – they are in the front of the homework books that children will be bringing home.

Mymaths

Below is a help guide for students and parents.

Help for students and parents Q. How do I view my homework?

When you go to the MyMaths website, you will need to log in using your school username and password.

Username: woodlands1

Password: square287

You will then see another box labelled ‘My Portal’ where you can put in your personal username and password. In here you should see your homework on the first screen you come to. If you can’t see it, then make sure you are on your homework page by clicking the ‘My Homework’ tab on the left hand side of the page.

As you complete your homework, remember to click ‘Mark it’ as this gives instant feedback and shows your teacher that it has been completed.

Parents

Your child will already have been issued their own log in and you should have received a parent letter containing their personal details. If not, please speak to their class teacher who will be able to help you.  Q. What type of computer do I need to have to use MyMaths?

MyMaths is used completely online, so you don’t need any special computer equipment or software to use it. All you need is an Internet connection and a web browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome. To make sure it works correctly you should also check that you have updated your web browser (for Internet Explorer please make sure it is version 10 or above) and that you have installed an up-to-date version of Flash. You can also use Android tablets and mobile devices for MyMaths, but if you are using an iPad

then you will need to download the free Puffin Academy app in order to access the MyMaths website.

As well as children being able to access their homework, there are also a number of online maths games to help consolidate their understanding.
